The true value of mentoring in this generation is not access to business or career networks. Rather, it’s two-fold.
First, “home training” – transferring values that ideally should have been learnt at home, but which circumstances prevented.
Second, validation – encouragement and support that lead to self-confidence and self-belief.
Without self-confidence and values, young people will destroy the business networks they are given access to. Case in point: You come late for a meeting with a mentor. Instead of genuinely apologizing and taking responsibility, you adduce “traffic” as a valid excuse. Hence, a network was presented to you and you destroyed it.
Nigeria as presently constituted destroys hope and drive. Our technology addiction leads to mental health challenges, as we are bombarded with bad news, negative media and social comparisons. Those who survive have other sources of hope and stability. A mentor is one.
