If you could consider all you give to others as giving to God, you would lose your sense of entitlement.
You can never make up for all the things God does for you. At best, you honour him when you help others. Like Jesus said, “The things you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me.” It’s a unique perspective to giving.
I’m learning that I should never wait until I have a lot, before giving. I should give whatever I have, in the moment I have it.
I’m also learning to stop thinking of money as the only currency of giving. Giving myself is harder and much more valuable.
Nowadays, I give ahead. I sow in times of plenty towards times of lack because I understand life is seasonal. Someone once taught me that giving is like concentric circles or ripples. If you keep giving and paying stuff forward, someday you will get so many ripples going, that they will keep overlapping with your times of lack. Maybe that’s what Solomon meant when he said, “Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, yes, even [divide it] to eight, for you know not what evil may come upon the earth.”
