Here’s some personal advice if you’ve just begun working. Know that, you cannot afford to work at work alone. You should work from home too. Do so, and your supervisor will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of your preparedness and the depth of ideas that were cooked at home.
This means the value of having a personal laptop and Internet modem at home, far outweighs the value of having a home theatre system.
Work hard while you’re young. In 5 to 10 years, you will be able to set your own pace and call your own shots. Pay your dues and do it quickly, while you have energy and time.
Looking back on my career, I’m grateful that I didn’t drive during the first few years. The amount of work I got done in buses during traffic, was phenomenal. I also read many business magazines while being driven, like Fortune, Forbes and The Economist. Reading business magazines was mandatory where I work. In hindsight, few things have helped my business writing skills and global world view like those magazines.
The first time I traveled abroad, I felt so much at home. I knew more about some global brands than the clients I was meeting. My level of exposure and knowledge of business practice was impressive because I was a reader.
Don’t be seduced by the mantra of work-life balance. It is earned. It is the reward for those who have paid their dues.
