As I read the Nigerian Constitution today, I realised the critical importance of the National and State Houses of Assembly. Without them, there can be no meaningful long term political, regulatory or policy change.

By extension therefore, our Political Parties are equally important. If we don’t nurture Parties with sound ideologies and values, those Parties will throw up Legislators without integrity and ideas. They would then institute oppressive laws.

A dream scenario would be to have the right Party with a majority in the Legislature. One that is interested in sustainable change and not just power and money, like we have today.

Instead of being so fixated on the President, perhaps we should also consider the Legislators who limit or enhance his/her ability to make laws.
