It’s often said that the key to skills development is focused repetition. But, in your bid to become proficient at something, be mindful of joy-sucking and soul-destroying capacity building. A few illustrations come to mind.

I learnt to swim a long time ago. The idea was for it to become an exercise option. But for some reason, I was never consistent. I picked it up again a short while back and something hit me. I actually do not enjoy swimming. I can’t force myself to relish it So, I learnt enough to survive and then moved on.

It’s the same thing with accounts. I hate invoicing and bank reconciliations. But, I love running investment numbers and the art of portfolio allocation. So, I’m now in the process of delegating all mundane accounting functions for my knowledge brand.

While I think skills development is useful, please focus on topics that give you joy and that you’re adept at. It will be easier to sustain your enthusiasm. Know that you have competing priorities in life. You also have limited time. Why waste it on something that causes you stress and pain?
