Many years ago, I became comfortable in my skin because of an experience in Zanzibar.

The Tanzanian region is a water sports destination and so I learnt to swim before the trip. Not much to do in the all-inclusive resort besides snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, beach lounging, and so on.

I scheduled a snorkeling expedition, and the informational packet advised participants to dress according to their level of comfort.

Comparing Yourself to Others

At the boat pick up point, I saw Europeans in bikinis, Africans in cycling shorts and tees, Arabs in leggings and long-sleeves. Interestingly, everyone was so focused on enjoying the experience, no one cared what the others wore.

And that’s when I realized that the African habit of comparing ourselves to one another is so limiting.

We all came to this world to enjoy life and to fulfill our destinies. No one is looking at you. So, dress according to your level of comfort.

Be Authentic

In life, try to show up in a way that’s authentic. If you’re tired of the restrictions of corporate life, switch to the dynamic pace of a startup. If you love to dress to the nines for dinner or for an “owambe”, revel in it. And, if you desire a specific type of home or life, build it.

Avoid comparing yourself to others or seeking unnecessary validation. After all, if you don’t tell anyone about your plans, they won’t know.
