I was thinking about Nigerian stories of male and female rape today.
Publicising stories about rape will reduce its opportunistic nature, as people become more vigilant. It will also bring some relief to the victims. But, I’m wondering when Nigeria will finally tackle rape’s root causes – impunity, little or no consequence and easy access to sexual programming materials. As it stands, we barely provide therapeutic help to deprogram those who recognise they have a problem. I wrote about this tangentially here. So essentially, we have monsters who will simply learn to hide their “monsterhood” more carefully.
If you have been blessed you with resources, I ask that you support the few therapy platforms that we have in Nigeria. Also empower first responders like The Mirabel Centre.
